Frequently asked questions
Cost & eligibility
Is it really free?
State and federal grants are available for qualifying customers. For households in the lower-income tier, approved improvements are covered at no cost up to the program cap ($14,000 in most of our area, $12,000 in Sullivan County). Moderate-income households get 50% covered. The home energy assessment is free for everyone who qualifies.
How do I know if I qualify?
Use our 4-question checker, or call us. It depends on your county, household size and income — or whether anyone in the home received HEAP, SNAP, TANF or SSI in the last 12 months.
I rent. Can I still do this?
Yes. Renters in 1–4 unit homes qualify with the landlord’s written approval. We provide the form.
What if I’m over the income limit?
You can still hire us directly. We’ll quote the work up front and tell you about any utility rebates or financing open at the time.
The process
How long does it take?
The assessment takes 2–3 hours. Installation usually takes 1–3 days. The longest wait is typically the grant program’s review of the application — we’ll keep you posted.
Do I need to be home?
An adult needs to be home for the assessment. For installation we need access to the attic, basement or crawlspace — we’ll agree on the details with you.
Who does the work?
Our own trained crews, not subcontractors you’ve never met.
Will it be messy?
We protect floors and work areas and clean up each day. Attic and crawlspace work is mostly out of sight.
Crawlspaces & basements
What is encapsulation?
Sealing a crawlspace off from the outdoors and the ground: closing vents, laying a heavy-duty liner over the floor and up the walls, insulating the walls, and controlling humidity with a dehumidifier.
Is encapsulation the same as waterproofing?
No. If water is coming in, we deal with it first (drainage, sump pump). Encapsulation then keeps the space dry.
Do grants cover encapsulation?
For qualifying customers they can cover the pieces — vapor barrier, foundation wall and rim joist insulation, crawlspace ceiling insulation, dehumidifier and sump pump — when your assessment shows they’re needed.
